"Our usual understanding of light is dependent on a dualistic ontology, which relegates it to the role of medium between object and subject, mechanistically reflecting off the one into the eye of the other. But if there is no subject-object ontology, light must be re-evaluated to incorporate not only that object that it is believed to refer to, but also the consciousness which is usually believed to be aware of it. This means that visual 'things' are composed not of matter but of something which we might term 'light' and such 'light-things' are sunya [empty] because they do not refer to anything else (e.g. a material substratum) when they are experienced as they are in themselves, non-dually"
